This spring, I had the wonderful opportunity to volunteer with the Vancouver Biennale and support the work of another artist. Brazilian artist, Marcelo Moscheta, creates installations, drawings, and photographs inspired by landscape and our human relationship with it. Artwork after my own heart.
Days were spent collecting specific driftwood pieces from Vancouver beaches. Each log was tagged with its own GPS coordinates, and later scrubbed and cleaned in the 9,000 square foot Biennale International Pavilion, at the foot of Lonsdale in North Vancouver. I definitely got my exercise covered while working on this project.
Next was the tricky installation of Moscheta’s eight by twelve foot graphite-on-PVC drawing onto its support frame. I had never seen anyone use graphite on PVC before, and was completely enamoured with the results. The depth and reflective quality was just gorgeous.

Once the drawing was hung, it was time to compose the driftwood part of the installation. This was a real treat, as Marcelo really inlcuded us in his process, and welcomed our input. It is always fascinating to learn about an other artist’s process, and especially to see the similarities and parallels in using mediums that seem so different from the outside, such as my mixed-media painting, and his driftwood installation. I was surprised to find that I could help Marcelo compose his installation with his logs, in the same way I work to create balance and interest in my mixed-media paintings.
The final thing I took away from this experience was the importance of attitude when working on a project like this. Morscheta had a clear vision of what he wanted to create when he arrived in Vancouver, three weeks before the piece’s deadline. He is very organized, passionate, and detail oriented, yet he maintained an easy-going and flexible attitude. He kept the working mood light and playful, no matter what we were doing, or what was going wrong. He faced every challenge with a positive approach and a willingness to find a different solution, if need be.
Working with Marcelo Moscheta and the Vancouver Biennale was a pleasure, and I look forward to participating in more projects like this in future.
This work will be on display at the Biennale International Pavilion from June - November 2014, along with the works of other artists from Brazil.
