Welcome to the Community
28 x 50”
This piece was commissioned by Vancity for their LEED-certified, prototype branch in South Burnaby. Vancity is Canada’s largest community credit union, with a focus on developing healthy, sustainable communities. I am continually impressed with all that they are doing. For example, in April 2008, Vancity officially announced it had achieved carbon neutrality, two years ahead of schedule and the first North America based financial institution to do so.
Welcome to the Community was inspired by the designers and architects, around the world, that are currently building developments that are environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable and affordable for all. They are being designed and built with the community - not for the community, therefore individual needs are met with efficiency and less resources. There is also a greater sense of pride and responsibility within the community when designing in this way.
This work was created using repurposed and natural materials such as found tree branches, needle-felted wool elements that I make myself, magazine clippings, cardboard, and many layers of newspaper.
